Heart Hat

I made heart hats for my nieces.  This idea was inspired by these adorable heart socks from Erica at Caught on a Whim.  Check out her fantastic blog at Caught on a Whim.  She’s got so many great things there.

I set out to make the socks but couldn’t find any good socks!  So I made hats instead.  I bought simple hats, 1 piece of red felt.  I already had embroidery thread.  I had only planned to sew the hearts on but once I was done, decided to add initials.  They were very easy and fun!  Thanks for the inspiration Erica.  :)

Happy Birthday Sister-in-Law and Friend!

Dearest Luisa!

Dear Luisa,

On your birthday, I thank God for you.  I know you were meant to be my sister-in-law and friend.  Thank you for your letters, your calls, your laugh.  Thanks for your sweetness and your fierceness.  Thanks for being wife of my brother and mother of my nephew.  And aunt of my son.  :)

Enjoy your day.  I love you!

Giving books wings

I am not a collector of books.  I am a giver away of books. Sure, there are a few I keep: the odd poetry book, reference books, books of art and craft, bibles and prayer books, language books. I love cookbooks. But what I read most are novels and I don’t often reread novels. Novels have wings. They are meant to fly and soar. While I’m reading a book I’m always thinking of who I know that might like it. When I finish it I give it away and I don’t want it back. In that way books travel and soar and I like to be a part of that.

The palpability of handwritten letters

Why do handwritten letters mean so much more than emails?  Is it because you are actually touching the thing your friend touched?  Is it because it took more effort than just typing and pressing send?  Is it because it’s historical and old?  Why?

How to Eat Junk on Weight Watchers

I had a pretty decadent menu at my Hello Kitty birthday party.  I served all my childhood favorites:

Pepperoni Pizza

m&ms

Nacho Cheese Doritos

Cake and Ice Cream

Here’s how I was able to indulge and still keep my Weight Watchers vows:

 1 slice pepperoni pizza

1 slice yellow cake with chocolate butter cream frosting

1/4 c. strawberry ice cream

3 doritos

1/8 c. m&ms

All that was 20 points.  I get 49 points per week (I do the Simply Filling plan).  Of course I was able to eat

unlimited salad, water, and baby carrots.  That’s what filled me up.  :)

My Birthday Party – Young At Heart

I celebrated my birthday over the weekend.  It was a very small gathering.  I had a Hello Kitty  theme.  Yes, I am 49 years old.  Call me forever young and quirky but I like Hello Kitty and that’s what I wanted.

I baked my birthday cake.  It was a recipe from CakeSpy that I found on Serious Eats.  It turned out so well.

It was the best cake I’ve ever baked and I owe it all to the recipe!  Yum.  I think everyone liked it.  I had a few friends at the party.

My husband and I were there, of course.

And my poor Mother who was horrified that I was 49 having a Hello Kitty party!  LOL

We tried to light 49 candles but it took too long and we gave up less than halfway through.  :(

It was a great party, and exactly what I wanted!  :)

Birthday Card System: Never forget a birthday!

Source: google.com via Rachel on Pinterest

I have a system for birthday cards that enables me to send cards to my loved ones on time and pretty much without fail.  My sister-in-law, smart girl that she is, suggested that I share it.  So here it is:

First you need a birthday book like this:

You don’t need a fancy one.  All you need is a calendar.  Gather all your birthdays and keep them here.  This is your birthday bible.  The last week of the month, get out your birthday book with your supplies: birthday cards, stamps, address labels and post-it notes.

Go through the next month, find your birthday people, and write out your cards to each one.

As you complete each card, put it in its envelope, address it, put a stamp and a return address label on it.

Now here comes the important part: Put a post-it note on it with the date it should be mailed.

Now put them all together in a stack in order of date to be mailed.

I keep my stack at work.  Each morning I take things that need to get mailed that day.  I take off the post-it note and it’s ready to go – already addressed and stamped!

The good news?  Your loved ones get their cards on time!  Try it!

Muddy’s Bake Shop

I was in Memphis a few weeks ago and went to Muddy’s Bake Shop with a friend.  I had read about it in Southern Living Magazine and knew it was a “must visit.”  It was an adventure to get there. I thought it would be downtown or in some funky neighborhood. I didn’t expect it to be in a strip mall.  It was a nice strip mall but still.  It just goes to show you that fun places are everywhere.  Keep your eyes open!

I loved it!  It was a cute little place with a great spirit and very sweet staff.  They were kind and engaging and clearly happy in their jobs.  I would LOVE to work at a bakery.  It was light and airy with cute gifts like adorable handmade retro aprons, cool t-shirts and kitchen towels, and other sweet little things.  There was a big portrait of Muddy who was the owner’s Mom or Grandmother.  And then of course, the cupcakes!  It took me so long to decide what to have.  Honestly, about 10 minutes. They had other yummy things too like pudding. pimento cheese spread, lemon bars – you get the picture. I decided on an old-fashioned cupcake which was a chocolate cupcake covered with a marshmallow like white frosting and a cherry.  So yummy.  That icing!  I also had one chocolate chip cookie.  Couldn’t resist.  Then they were giving samples of two cakes.  Turned out they were developing a recipe.  They wanted to know which was better, cherry cake with cherry icing or yellow cake with cherry icing.  I liked the yellow cake with cherry icing. Yes, I tried them both.  I couldn’t let them down! Here are a few pics.  So fun and yummy.
