Mistaken for a Muslim Woman

Last night I was at the airport waiting for my driver.  It was late and very cold.  I was coming from Memphis where it had been about 30 degrees warmer.  I put on every piece of clothing I had in my bag and covered my head with a scarf. While waiting, there was a Muslim-looking woman.  I say Muslim-looking because on that night I was a Muslim-looking woman too.  She smiled at me as if to say, “Hi sister.”  I smiled back but felt a little uncomfortable.  I wasn’t trying to look Muslim but I was aware that I did before I even saw her.  Should I tell her that I’m not Muslim?  It was silly.  Who cares. She smiled at me. I smiled back.  We are sisters.  I am Christian.  She is Muslim, probably, but who knows for sure.

The picture above is of me in Morocco about 6 years ago.  I can pass for many things: Puerto Rican, Dominican, Ethiopian, Muslim.  I am none of those things.  I am Christian, of African descent (most likely West African), English, Irish, German and French.  Most importantly, I am human.

Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween.  I always have.  Being a Christian, I have run into many Christians who think celebrating Halloween is inherently evil.  I disagree.  For me Halloween is about candy, fun, dressing up, neighborhoods, community, and children.  I have fond memories of going trick-or-treating with my brother.  I also have sweet memories of taking my son out on Halloween night.  I still dress up to give out candy.  Last year I donned an orange and black apron and a witch’s hat.  This year I’ll wear an orange shirt with Trick or Treat across the front.  Am I witch or do I encourage witchcraft?  No.  To me, it is just dressing up and having fun.  Like being in a play.  I love handing out candy to the little ones (and some big ones) in the neighborhood.  It can be good, clean fun.

We may be Christians but I believe we should choose our battles and lighten up a little.

I am a Christian and I approve this message.

Being a Baby Christian

In some ways I’ve been a Christian my whole life, and in others just a few years.  I accepted Jesus many times throughout my life but the first few times, it didn’t really “take.”  I strayed away.  I pray now that I am home for good.  Each day I grow in my faith and I look back to the confused, troubled person I was.  I am grateful that God has never forsaken me although I’ve turned my back on Him.

What are the top 10 things about being a new Christian?

  1. You sometimes lack confidence in your faith, especially to outsiders
  2. You are on fire for the Lord!
  3. You go to church religiously
  4. You try hard to pray
  5. You try hard to do everything
  6. You still have regrets about your old way of life
  7. You no longer associate with some people from your past
  8. You have peace in your soul
  9. You are grateful about where you are
  10. You love God!
