i choose me

I choose me. I choose thinner. I choose my health. I choose to feel good. I choose to use restraint. I choose not to eat junk. I choose to be in control. I choose to be disciplined.  I choose to stick with this. I choose not to be a human Yo-Yo. I choose to keep my weight down. I choose me.

Structure and Creativity

I like rules.  I’m a lawyer so I was taught to learn the rules, know the rules, and play within the rules. Sometimes we find ways to bend the rules, or get around the rules without actually breaking them.

One of the reasons I like Weight Watchers is that it gives me a structure of rules to work within.  I know that I can have a certain number of food points.  I work those points!  Tonight I made a basic salad of lettuce, tomato and cucumber.  You’d think I’d eat that and save points for something chocolate.  Not tonight.  Tonight I wanted a yummy salad.  So I added 1 tablespoon of blue cheese dressing and 1 tablespoon of crunchy fried onions.  I was within my points but I enjoyed my meal.

Weight Watchers gives me limits, rules, and I get to play around with them.  I don’t break them but I push them to their limit.  I use my appetite, my cravings, and my creativity to create a meal that is satisfying, healthy, and within my points maximum.

Wanting to stop being a Yo-Yo

I have struggled with my weight throughout my life.  In a word: yo-yo.  I can lose weight but I gain it back.  I’ve tried all kinds of diets, starting with the crazy diets I tried in my teens like the grapefruit diet and the lollipop diet. Yes, you guess it – all you eat is lollipops.  Healthy, huh?

I’ve been vegan, vegetarian, tried Paleo, counting calories, Atkins, and SlimFast.  I haven’t tried everything but I’ve done a serious sample.  What works for me and what I keep returning to is Weight Watchers.  Why do I leave it?  Because it keeps me accountable, makes me exercise control and doesn’t allow me to eat whatever I want all day long. That’s why I like it.  And that’s why I hate it.

I realize that I may just have to do Weight Watchers for the rest of my life if I want  to keep my weight down.  Is that such a bad thing?  No!  When I’m on it I feel calmer, eat better and I am in control.  So, here goes…

Try Livestrong to Lose Weight!

I have been using Livestrong for about 3 weeks now.  It is a health site affiliated with Lance Armstrong.

What you do: put in your height, weight, activity level and it tells you how many calories you should have.  You enter your food on “My Plate” and it is preloaded with lots of foods with numbers of calories (or you can enter the calories yourself.)  It also shows you your ratio of fats, carbs and proteins. There is also a weight tracking area where you put in your weight each day.   It asks you whether you want to gain, maintain or lose.  The site also provides you with little badges for tracking calories, exercising, and weight loss.  There’s a food diary and other apps.  There is also a “My Plate” for people with diabetes called “My Plate D.”
The best part is that it’s free.  You can pay for extra apps but the free one is fine for me.

What I love about Livestrong: It is helping me understand portion control. It keeps me accountable.  It encourages me to be aware of and track what I’m eating.

So far I’ve lost 9 pounds!
