Valentine’s “Mantel”

As we don’t have a fireplace, we don’t really have a mantel.  So I created one using our server in the dining room.  Lately I’ve taken a fancy to decorating for the holidays.  I don’t do every one (no Mardi Gras, for example) but I will do most of the biggies.

1. Subway art is my favorite thing.  It’s easy and I keep subway art for each holiday right in the frame and just switch them out.

2. Holiday candy is fun and easy.  I just display in clear jars.

3. Instead of buying things, I just walk around and pull out things that fit the color scheme.

4. Banners; there are lots of free printable banners I make out of paper and ribbon.

Happy holidays!  All of them 🙂

The Alphabet of Our Love Book

I made a book for my husband for Valentine’s Day.  Luckily he doesn’t read this blog.  🙂

I started out with this idea I found on Pinterest.

I decided to make it in a photo book format even though I wasn’t going to use many photos.  I made one on Shutterfly.  If you’d like to see it, please do!

Cute Valentine’s Craft Idea

Check out this cute idea from Erica at Caught on a Whim.  Love it!

Um… Yum!

Now that Christmas is over, it’s all about Valentine’s Day in the grocery store and on Pinterest.  I think I will bake these for my husband and give them to him in a red cardboard box.  They are called Boyfriend Brownies and they are:

1 scoop brownie batter + 1 scoop chocolate chip cookie dough.

My husband is my husband not my boyfriend.  But he’s my boyfriend too.  This reminds me of a joke my husband tells:

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

“No, my wife won’t let me.”

🙂

Oh Holy Night

Merry Christmas Eve!  I hope you enjoy Celine Dion’s O Holy Night.

Give the gift of birthdays

Are you the keeper of birthdays in your family? If so, a thoughtful and useful gift is to give calendars to family members with family birthdays written in. You can get fancy and make one on Shutterfly or you can get out a pen and write them in.  Start with a cute calendar the person will like.  Get out your birthday book.  Write in the birthdays (and anniversaries) for each month.  Another idea is to glue pictures of the birthday person instead of writing in their name.

This is one of the Christmas gifts I give to my brother and his family every year. They get a calendar for the new year and they have an easy way to remember birthdays.

Developing a Gratitude Practice

It’s funny how things work out.  I had a draft of this post.  Two days ago my cousin started posting on Facebook about thankfulness.  Each day of November she plans to post about something she is thankful for.  Also, the Thanksgiving holiday falls at the end of the month.

I make an effort to be grateful for many reasons.  Because I should.  Because I am grateful.  Because being grateful makes me feel good.

One of the ways I practice gratitude is by thanking others for things they have done for me.  Today I was in the Memphis airport and bought a salad.  It was so good, I almost left my seat at my gate and walked back to the restaurant to thank the person who made it for me.

I always keep a supply of thank you cards at the ready.  Take the time to tell the person you appreciated what they did.  Mention specifically what they did.  Tell them how you are using the gift or what their deed meant to you and why.  I don’t think you can thank people too much.  No good deed is too small to thank someone.  Although it can be hard to be thanked, people appreciate being thanked.  I know I do.

Try to have a spirit of gratitude for things big and small. Thank others for what they have done for you.  Appreciate!
